Teaching for the 21st century with "Mimio Interactive"
The students are so excited about the new addtion to our classroom.  Thanks to Mrs. Frick, our AGP classes now have a powerful new technology that allows for more interactive teaching to captivate, motivate and help students retain the material presented in class.   The Mimio Interactive is a compact bar that attaches to our whiteboard and converts it into an interactive whiteboard.  In other words, our ordinary white board is now a computer screen where students can use a special stylus as a mouse to turn learning into a vivid sensory experience with music, sounds, images, and animation.

This technology will take our classroom lessons to an entire new level and we are very excited!

Where is the SMath?
SMath is EVERYWHERE!!!  AGP students are finding this out first-hand as they have been involoved in a new program titled "Where Is the SMath".  The students have opportunities to view photographs and discuss the science, math or both (SMath) they observe in the image.  As the photograph is displayed, these questions are asked:  "Where Is the Science?"  "Where Is the Math?"  "Where Is the SMath?"

Many of the math/science connections are obvious to the students, however it has been amazing to observe their higher-level thinking skills as they make the connections and discuss their findings with their peers.  These discussions have been a great tool to test student's knowledge regarding math and science and build vocabulary skills.  It has also generated an interest for them to take their own photographs and bring them in to share.

Third Grade AGP students were the first create their SMath projects.  It was amazing to see their interesting pictures and thought-provoking questions.  They did an incredible job with this assignment and we all learned a great deal from their presentations.

We look forward to our future SMath projects with the 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th Graders.

Study Island and FCAT Explorer
The students are challenging themselves to earn blue ribbons in math and science with our Study Island program.  5th Graders are also busy earning points in math and science with FCAT Explorer.  These online programs can be accessed at school and at home and are great resources to boost their academic skills.

FCAT and Stanford Testing

FCAT Testing begins March 9th.  Many families have asked how they can prepare their children to be successful.  Here are a few tips:
  • Make sure your child attends school regularly. The more effort your child puts into learning, the more likely he or she will perform well on tests.
  • Meet with your child’s teacher to discuss his or her progress. Ask teachers to suggest ways to help the child prepare for tests.
  • Encourage your child, especially when he or she does well. A positive outlook helps children do their best.
  • Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home.
  • Make sure your child is well rested on school days, especially on test days.
  • Give your child a well-rounded diet. This will help ensure a healthy body and a healthy, active mind.
  • Provide books and magazines for your child. By reading new materials, your child will learn new words that might appear on tests.
  • Don’t be too anxious about your child’s test scores. The best advice you can give your child is to “just relax and do your best.”
