Here's What's Going On...
Language Arts Language Arts
Well, we are done with our first novel of the year and I believe it was loved by one and all! As you all know, we read the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. We did many activities related to that book. We made models, filmstrips, problem-solution puzzles and a guide to wilderness plants and animals! I would suggest allowing your child to get other books by that author as all of them loved Paulsen’s style of writing.
We will now be delving into our new reading series where we will enjoy guided reading groups. We will be using both high interest short books and more novels throughout the year.
Homework: Please make sure that your child is reading every night at home. He/she should be reading 20-30 minutes each night. You can always get involved with your child's reading by taking turns reading pages, having your child read out loud and you ask questions about what they just read, or after your child reads so many pages have him/her discuss what was read (create a dialog).
Math We have moved onto multiplication and division with a touch of algebra. Please make sure your child knows their multiplication facts. These facts are very important and will be the foundation to most of the fifth grade math from here on.
Look Back...
During the months of August and September we took a good look at Mixtures and Solutions, and Physical and Chemical Changes. We did many hands-on experiments. Take a "look back" in the binder to review the work completed.
Look Forward...
We are now starting units on Energy. The students will be responsible for creating an instrument that makes sound using vibrations. The instrument should make both a high and low pitch. Look for more details in the Student Planner. The final project is due on Monday, October 19th.
Science Olympic Trials are going to be October 14-21st. Winners of this event are invited to represent our school in the Hillsborough County District Event being held on Saturday, November 7th and 21st.
Please check out the Science websites listed to the right!

Spelling and Vocabulary Tests: Now that we are into the new series, we will be having more spelling words to study… vocabulary will continue also. Lists will be provided for the students to bring home, or they will write the words in their vocabulary composition books.

Study Island is a great new website for the students to get more practice for the FCAT. Some of the students have already tried it and love it!!
