        Hello Bulldogs!

One of our main priorities at Ballast Point is to create a safe and caring environment for your children. Our Character Education Program is an anchor to which student achievement and school safety are tied.  Each month we focus on a character trait.  This includes emphasis on the meaning of the trait and practicing the trait so it becomes a habit.  In addition to lessons taught in the classrooms, each character quality is reinforced on the morning show, through awards/assemblies, with bulletin boards and signs in  classrooms.

Character Education plays a big role in addressing "Bullying". The curriculum teaches conflict resolution skills and we will continue our Anti-Bullying Program which teaches students what bullying is and how to deal with a bully.  Stressing strategies such as:  seeking immediate help from an adult; speaking up and offering support to the victim with kindness;  expressing disapproval of bullying by not joining in the laughter, teasing , or spreading rumors.  With parent support and assistance we can work together to make children feel welcomed, included, connected and ready to learn.

Internet Safety has become a great concern for parents and educators.  At Ballast Point, we provide internet access that focuses on educational purposes.  Teachers, students, and administrators are instructed on issues related to safe and responsible use of the Internet.  Students are monitored and supervised during computer time.    Here are some tips I hope you will find helpful.

Monitor your child's Internet use consistently.

Talk to your child about your Internet safety concerns in a positive way.
Put the computer in a common area like the family room.

Explain to your child to NEVER give out personal information ( name, address, phone, school name) and NEVER meet anyone they have met online.

Our Character Word for the Month of March is "Courage" which means the ability to face problems directly.
